Katy Perry – how her Pop Videos appeal to her target audience and reflect her private life.

When Katy Perry first started out her career her target audience was young girls from 14-17. She made sure that in her image she would:

        • Be like an older sister / friend type role model
        • Reflect some of the anxieties young girls have
        • Be someone young girls can admire and want to be (appear sexy in a non-threatening way)

This video is fun and has a happy ending which would have appealed to an audience her age. The song about a good not being sure whether he wants to marry her or not would probably be the fear of a young girl therefore the ending of the video were he decides to marry her is one that reassures them. In the video though she looks sexy it is not in a provocative way.

Last Friday night follows the same trend that recognises teenage insecurities. This video starts out with her as an unattractive teenage girls and then later on she becomes sexy though she remains a bit awkward (she still has her braces or odd colour shoes). This would make young girls feel like the same would happen with them. They show a lot of teenage girl issues such as wax strips and adding on fake breasts.

When California girls came out Katy had gotten together with well known play boy Russell Brand. We begin to see her making a transformational from the teenage girl image to a more sexy persona. We still have teenage girl elements such as the candy and pink but it has become more obscene , for example the candy canes that turn into snakes. At this moment she has began to lose her teenage girl audience.

When this video came out Katy had gone through a messy divorce with Russell Brand and had lost most of her target audience. This video was a way to get that target audience back. It starts with intellectuality when she's on the set of her controversial video California girls. She did this as a way of showing that , that was not the real her and she was just playing a part. After we see her getting in touch with her inner child and re discovering herself. We see prince charming on her horse but she doesn't fall, for him probably symbolising her relationship with Russell brand.

In roar Katy Perry has crash  landed a plane into the jungle she is with a guy who treats her rudely we assume he is supposed to be Russell Brand because he keeps looking in the mirror. Right after he is eaten by a tiger and its just her on her own. Finding her own way around the jungle represents Katy Perry's new found independence. She emerges now dressed in sexy clothing but in an empowering way because there are no males so she is not an object of erotic desire.
